The Role:

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join Agilio and take ownership of several of our engineering teams and products. The exact shape of the role will evolve, but you’ll likely be working across 3–4 engineering teams and around 6 products. It’s a broad role, so you’ll need to be comfortable balancing priorities across different teams and products and knowing where to focus your time. Agilio has grown significantly over the last seven years, bringing together around 20 businesses through acquisition. As a result, we have a large and varied portfolio of healthcare software, with products at different stages of maturity, built using different technologies and architectures. We’re investing in modernising and consolidating our technology, improving how we build and operate software, and exploring how AI can change the way our engineering teams work. This creates some interesting engineering challenges and plenty of opportunity to influence what the next stage of Agilio’s technology looks like.

Key Responsibilities:

You’ll be responsible for the people, delivery and engineering health of your teams and products. You’ll work closely with Engineering, Product and stakeholders across the business to agree priorities, solve problems and make the right decisions about where we invest our engineering time.

• Lead, coach and develop engineers across your teams. Support Lead Engineers and other technical leaders to take ownership and lead effectively.
• Work closely with Product to shape priorities, plans and the longer-term direction of your products.
• Build strong relationships across the business and represent Engineering in decisions affecting your products.
• Own the technical direction and architecture across your products, working with Lead Engineers and teams to make good technical decisions and ensure they align with our wider technology direction.
• Understand the technical health of your products, including security, reliability, performance, maintainability and technical debt.
• Make sure technical risks and investment needs are understood and factored into plans alongside product and customer priorities.
• Help teams create realistic delivery plans, manage dependencies and identify risks early.
• Help remove blockers and make decisions and trade-offs when teams need support.
• Improve engineering practices across areas such as automated testing, CI/CD, observability, security and operating software in production.
• Help teams make practical use of AI across the software development lifecycle and share what works across Engineering.
• Work with other Engineering Managers and technical leaders to solve common problems, align technical approaches and reduce unnecessary duplication across products.
• Recruit and onboard engineers as the teams grow.

Contribute to engineering initiatives that span teams and products. You’ll need to be comfortable with technology. You won’t make every technical decision, but you’ll be accountable for the technical direction of your area. You’ll need to understand the important decisions, challenge where necessary and make sure, we’re making choices that work beyond an individual team or product. You’ll also need to know when to step back and trust the engineers closest to the problem

Our technology

Our technology reflects the range of products that have come together as Agilio has grown. Most of our software is .NET, alongside products built using PHP and Python. Our products are predominantly web-based, with a mixture of server-side rendered

applications and SPAs, alongside a smaller number of mobile applications built using Flutter. Today our products run across Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, with Azure as our strategic cloud platform going forward. Part of the opportunity is helping us evolve this estate — making sensible decisions about where we standardise and consolidate while continuing to support and improve the products our customers rely on today.

Essential

• Proven experience leading and developing multiple software engineering teams.
• Previous experience in an Engineering Manager, Software Development Manager, Head of Engineering, or similar leadership role.
• Experience working closely with Product teams and business stakeholders to prioritise work and balance competing demands.
• Strong understanding of modern software development practices, including Agile delivery methodologies.
• Experience overseeing the technical direction of products and making decisions relating to architecture, security, scalability, reliability and technical debt.
• Ability to identify, assess and manage technical and delivery risks.
• Experience coaching, mentoring and developing engineers and technical leaders.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of an organisation.
• Experience managing products or platforms across a varied technology estate.
• Good understanding of cloud-based software environments (Azure, AWS or GCP).
• Experience improving engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, observability and secure software development.
• Ability to make pragmatic decisions and trade-offs in complex technical environments.
• Right to work in the UK.

Additional Information

Job type: The role is remote with occasional travel to one of our offices on an ad-hoc basis.
