The Managing Director, FundRock NZ Limited, is responsible for leading and growing the business with a focus on sales, business development, compliance, operational effectiveness, and strategic leadership. The role requires strong governance alignment with regulatory obligations, collaboration with the Board, Apex Group, and key stakeholders. The Managing Director must be an influential leader capable of developing and executing against a strategic vision, delivering operational excellence, achieving commercial goals, driving cultural transformation, identifying and managing key risks, and ensuring resilience within the team. The business is part of the global Apex Group and the Managing Director is also responsible for ensuring the business benefits from institutional knowledge and expertise across the Group.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership aligned with regulatory obligations and client outcomes.
  • Develop and recommend strategic vision and plans to the Board and execute approved initiatives.
  • Maintain governance maturity, audit readiness, and proactive regulator engagement.
  • Implement global strategic initiatives and align NZ operations with Apex Group policies and processes.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure FundRock NZ remains compliant with all statutory compliance obligations including MIS license obligations, AML/CFT programs, conflict of interest policies, and FMCA provisions related to marketing and sales.
  • Ensure the team develops and maintains a strong compliance culture.
  • Ensure the business considers the best interests of members of schemes it manages as required under our MIS Manager license.
  • Ensure robust risk management, operational resilience, and IT governance.

Culture, People & Change Leadership

  • Drive cultural and process improvements while maintaining operational stability.
  • Identify and successfully implement major change initiatives.
  • Foster an inclusive culture and promote open communication within the team.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to team members to enhance performance and development.
  • Safeguard institutional knowledge and talent continuity through succession planning.

Financial & Business Performance

  • Manage P&L, pricing discipline, and capital allocation to deliver sustainable growth.
  • Develop and implement plans for service growth and competitive expansion.
  • Maintain high-quality client service and strong client relationships to drive growth.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build trusted relationships with scheme sponsors, service providers, and stakeholders.
  • Develop constructive relationships with other Apex Group entities and staff, and with the Board of FundRock NZ.
  • Monitor SLA delivery and drive continuous improvement.

Innovation & Technology

  • Embed Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and operational resilience practices within technology and process frameworks.
  • Champion responsible AI adoption and automation to enhance efficiency and compliance.

Health & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with all workplace health and safety obligations under New Zealand legislation and Apex Group policies.
  • Promote a culture of safety and wellbeing across the organization, ensuring risk assessments and mitigation strategies are embedded in operational processes.

ESG Leadership

  • Champion FundRock NZ’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance principles in all business activities.
  • Drive initiatives that promote sustainability, ethical business practices, and diversity and inclusion within the organization.

Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years as a senior executive within financial services.
  • Proven leadership in small-to-mid-sized organizations (10–50 staff).
  • Deep understanding of MIS license obligations.
  • Exposure to business strategy, governance processes, budgeting, and operational management.
  • Exceptional stakeholder communication and Board engagement skills.
  • Strong commercial acumen and accountability with P&L.
  • Comprehensive understanding of NZ financial markets.
  • Ability to negotiate, persuade, and influence desired outcomes with credibility in financial markets.
  • Experience managing change and cultural transformation.
  • Strong collaboration and strategic influence capabilities.
  • Ability to manage priorities sensibly and embrace dynamic environments.
  • Knowledge of BCP and operational resilience best practices.
  • Familiarity with AI, automation, and data governance principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and self-motivation.
