Role Purpose

The Environment Manager is responsible for the day-to-day coordination, governance, and operational health of all Workday and Salesforce environments (Production and non‑Production). This role ensures environments are correctly configured, available, and aligned to release, testing, and change activities across all stakeholders.

The position acts as the central point of coordination between internal teams, system integrators, Workday and Salesforce, ensuring environment usage is controlled, compliant, and supports business delivery without risk to Production stability.

Key Responsibilities

Environment Strategy & Continuous Improvement

  • Define and maintain the environment strategy across Workday and Salesforce, ensuring optimal allocation of environments to projects, testing cycles, and BAU needs.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce environment conflicts, improve deployment speed, and increase testing effectiveness.
  • Drive automation and tooling improvements to streamline refresh, configuration validation, and release readiness.
  • Maintain environment documentation, landscape diagrams, and operational runbooks.

Workday-Salesforce Environment Management

  • Coordinate and oversee all Workday-Salesforce environments (e.g. Production, Sandbox, Implementation, Testing).
  • Manage the end‑to‑end environment lifecycle strategy (planning, forecasting, optimisation)
  • Maintain clear ownership, purpose, and usage rules for each environment.
  • Ensure environments are appropriately refreshed, prepared, and validated for testing and release activities.
  • Responsibility for coordinating environment dependencies between Workday, Salesforce, integration platforms, and downstream systems.
  • Monitor environment availability, performance, and readiness in line with business needs.

Release & Change Coordination

  • Coordinate Workday bi-annual releases across environments, including readiness activities, testing cycles, and deployment sequencing.
  • Coordinate Salesforce seasonal releases (Spring, Summer, Winter).
  • Oversee change freeze management and ensure communication of blackout windows.
  • Manage early adopter tenants (Workday Preview, Salesforce sandboxes).
  • Provide risk assessments related to environment or release conflicts.
  • Manage environment schedules to support parallel initiatives (projects, enhancements, BAU changes).
  • Act as a key interface between change management, HRIS, Finance Systems, and technical teams.
  • Ensure changes are promoted through environments in line with governance and controls.

Testing & Deployment Support

  • Plan and coordinate environment usage for unit, system, integration, and user acceptance testing (UAT).
  • Ensure environments are correctly configured and data is suitable for testing purposes.
  • Support defect triage and resolution related to environment configuration or refresh activities.
  • Coordinate go‑live cutovers from non‑Production to Production environments.

Governance & Controls

  • Define and maintain the environment architecture, including naming conventions, data refresh rules, branching/tenant strategy.
  • Maintain alignment with IT security, data masking, integration architecture.
  • Partner with solution architects to ensure changes align to environment strategy.
  • Enforce environment access controls and usage standards.
  • Support audit, compliance, and risk activities related to Workday and Salesforce environments.
  • Maintain documentation covering environment strategy, refresh cycles, and operating procedures.
  • Ensure alignment with internal IT controls and Workday / Salesforce best practices.

Stakeholder & Vendor Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for environment-related queries.
  • Act as the operational owner during high‑severity environment incidents.
  • Coordinate with Workday-Salesforce and Tech teams for environment issues and requests.
  • Communicate environment availability, constraints, and changes to impacted stakeholders.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with Workday environments (HCM, Financials, Adaptive).
  • Experience working with CRM Salesforce (SalesCloud).
  • Experience with integration platforms (ex: Boomi, MuleSoft, Workday Studio, APIs).
  • Salesforce deployment tooling (ex: Gearset, DevOps Center).
  • Strong understanding of enterprise system lifecycles, testing phases, and release management.
  • Experience coordinating multiple stakeholders across IT, HR, Finance, and Data Governance.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a complex, multi‑initiative landscape.
  • Experience in HRIS, ERP, or enterprise SaaS platforms.
  • Familiarity with Workday releases, tenants, and environment refresh processes.
  • Ability to run complex environment calendars across multiple workstreams.
  • Experience with incident and problem management.
  • Comfortable working in large-scale, multi-tenant SaaS environments.
  • Exposure to audit, compliance, or SOX‑controlled environments.
  • Familiarity with Jira, ADO, or equivalent for work management.
  • Experience working with system integrators or managed service providers.
  • Structured, methodical, and delivery‑focused
  • Strong communicator with the ability to translate technical concepts for non‑technical stakeholders
  • Naturally collaborative with a strong service mindset
