1. General Description of the Job

As a Cloud Data Architect, you will be responsible for the creation and management of the data architecture landscape across Apex Group, working within the data architecture and wider architectural framework within the Group.

Working with data engineers, analysts, and other architecture functions, you will be responsible for architecting our modern data platform using a number of cutting-edge technologies in a multi-cloud environment.

While work is often driven by business requirements and design concepts, you will play a significant role in the continuous development and maturation of design patterns and automation processes for others to follow.

2. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to determine solution requirements.
  • Collaborate with business and IT teams to define and transition to future-state architecture.
  • Create high-level and low-level architecture documents based on the evolving data landscape and business requirements.
  • Develop and maintain the data architecture team's artefact repository, including patterns, principles, and the knowledge base.
  • Work with Group Data Governance to ensure architecture meets governance policies, standards, and best practices.
  • Proactively contribute to the development of internal standards, procedures, processes, and guidelines for data architecture.
  • Identify risks, issues, and assumptions within the data landscape and propose resolution and mitigation plans.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and provide impact analysis on how they may affect digital plans.
  • Perform any other duty instructed directly by the Managing Directors in accordance with Article 6.2 of the employment agreement.

3. Qualifications and Skills

Cloud Architecture

  • Familiarity with VNet and Subnet architecture (AWS VPC, Azure VNet).
  • Understanding of storage architecture design (Blob Storage, AWS S3, Azure Storage).
  • Implementation of Cloud IaaS and PaaS solutions.
  • Knowledge of Load Balancing and Traffic Manager setups.
  • Experience with cloud security elements (Firewalls, Security Groups, NACLs, IAM).
  • In-depth understanding of disaster recovery and backup, including site recovery and storage replication.
  • Knowledge of Cloud SaaS solutions integration.
  • Understanding of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

Database Architecture

  • Understanding of RDBMS PaaS configurations (AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL).
  • Knowledge of database high availability and disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Experience with performance monitoring and tuning settings.
  • Familiarity with data replication methodologies (Always On, Mirroring, Log Shipping).
  • Database security management involving encryption and access controls.

Data Pipeline Architecture

  • Data warehousing and data modelling.
  • Data Lakes (AWS Lake Formation, Azure Data Lake).
  • Cloud Data Warehouses (AWS Redshift, Azure Synapse, Snowflake).
  • ETL/ELT and pipeline tools (AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, Fivetran, Stitch).
  • Data Message Bus / Pub-Sub systems (AWS SNS & SQS, Azure ASQ, Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • Data programming languages (SQL, Python, Scala, Java).
  • Cloud Workflow Services (AWS Step Functions, Azure Logic Apps, Camunda).
  • Interactive Query Services (AWS Athena, Azure Data Lake Analytics).
  • Event and schedule management (AWS Lambda Functions, Azure Functions).
  • Traditional Microsoft BI Stack (SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS).
  • Reporting and visualisation tools (Power BI, QuickSight, Mode).
  • NoSQL and Graph Databases (AWS Neptune, Azure Cosmos DB, Neo4j) - desirable.
  • API Management - desirable.

Core Skills

  • 10+ years of experience in a similar role or a hands-on engineering / DevOps role at enterprise scale.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Critical thinking and research capabilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to plan and manage your own workload.
  • Ability to work well on your own initiative as well as part of a larger team.
  • Working knowledge of Agile Software Development Lifecycles.
