Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced IBM iSeries Administrator with 10+ years of experience to manage and maintain our IBM i (AS/400) environment. The ideal candidate will be responsible for system administration, performance tuning, security, backup and recovery, and supporting business applications. This role requires a deep understanding of IBM i systems, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring system reliability and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • System Administration: Manage and maintain IBM iSeries (AS/400) systems, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Security & Compliance: Implement and monitor security measures, user access controls, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Backup & Recovery: Develop and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability solutions to ensure business continuity.
  • Performance Monitoring & Tuning: Analyze system performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize system resources.
  • Patching & Upgrades: Apply system patches, firmware updates, and version upgrades while minimizing downtime. Perform storage upgrades, and apply patches needed to ensure a healthy and supportable infrastructure
  • Job Scheduling & Automation: Manage and optimize batch jobs, job scheduling, and automation using tools like Robot or Control-M and automation using tools like Robot or Control-M.
  • Troubleshooting & Support: Diagnose and resolve system issues, coordinate with vendors, and provide technical support to internal teams.
  • Database Administration: Maintain DB2 databases on IBM i, ensuring data integrity, security, and optimal performance.
  • Work with IBM Storage Team and other 3rd party storage support companies (Service Express and Clear Technologies) to diagnose storage issues.
  • Work with the Datacenters (Smart hands) for access for Vendors to repair Storage hardware.
  • Provide on-call support of storage systems, as needed by the business.
  • Integration & Middleware Support: Manage system integrations, APIs, and middleware solutions for data exchange between IBM i and other platforms.
  • Documentation & Training: Maintain detailed system documentation, procedures, and provide training to junior team members.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 8 to 10 years of experience as an IBM iSeries (AS/400) Administrator.
  • Extensive knowledge of IBM i OS (AS/400), DB2 databases, and system administration tools.
  • Strong experience with security configurations, user management, and compliance standards.
  • Hands-on experience with backup and recovery solutions like Flash copy Tool Kit, MIMIX, or similar tools.
  • Proficiency in performance tuning, job scheduling, and automation tools.
  • Expertise in system patching, PTF management, and hardware upgrades.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with IBM i logs, system messages, and performance metrics.
  • Knowledge of CL programming, SQL, and scripting for automation would be a plus.
  • Experience in managing high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Hands on Experience with HMC consoles.
  • Hands on experience on tools such as - iDoctor, CART, WebQuery, SEA Products
  • Scripting & Development Support: Create and maintain CL scripts, query optimization will be added advantage.
  • Storage:
    1. Knowledge on IBM cloud, SAN Volume Controllers, FS systems, Brocade switches.
    2. Analyzing the storage capacity, performance. Handle Storage migrations.
    3. Handling Storage hardware
    4. IBM Storage Volume Controller (SVC) – Used to manage multiple paths to the Storage devices
    5. IBM Global Mirror with Change Volumes – Used for data replication and DR
    6. IBM Storage Insights for troubleshooting, Performance and Capacity reporting
    7. IBM Storage Systems: DS900, FS7200 and learn new storage systems as they become available.
    8. IBM SanNav – Used to manage the Storage Network (SVC, switches, disk drawers)

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with RPG, COBOL, or Java-based application support on IBM i.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based integrations and hybrid IBM i environments.
  • Certifications such as IBM Certified System Administrator – IBM i or equivalent.
  • Experience with Power Systems Virtualization (VIOS) and logical partitioning (LPAR).

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • IBM i-related certifications (preferred).
