ROLE SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Global Head of Projects, the Global Head of Design will direct and manage the development of high quality Design relating to Inspired schools. The role will cover Greenfield projects as well as Enhancement and Expansions. You will be directing Inspired’s global portfolio of design changes and a range of projects from £1m to £60m in each location. You will need extensive experience with value engineering and setting up protocols across a diverse range of projects. This will include planning processes and all design work stages from feasibility through concept design, schematic design, design development and construction.

The Global Head of Design will also facilitate land use planning, commercial development processes and master planning for the campus as needed, to ensure that the design work produced by architects and engineers provides optimal high quality architectural solutions which match the operational and practical needs of each site. The Global Head of Design will manage the design process for new campuses as assigned and will also ensure that precise records are maintained for each property. Frequent architectural and technical reviews with close design analysis will be required as designs progress.

Position requires travel circa 20-30%

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct and manage the process of high quality international and local architect selection and other consultant selection for projects.
  • Direct with the general appointment and management of architects and the design process on various projects from Feasibility, Masterplanning, Concept Design, Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction stages.
  • Management and coordination of internal Design approvals and presentations.
  • Review design work as needed to ensure that the programme is being properly implemented and that designs are innovative, contextually appropriate, of high quality and within budgetary constraints.
  • Directly manage aspects of these design projects as a Project Manager where necessary.
  • Execute design tasks directly and manage design tasks as needed drawing from external consultants if required.
  • Regularly review drawings on major projects to ensure coordination between architecture, building services and engineering are in accordance with approved concept designs. Highlight issues where necessary and liaise with local delivery and Project Management team regularly.
  • Execute specific special facilities projects as assigned.
  • Manage the development of our centralised design brief and the coordination of End User Reviews, to transfer knowledge from built schools to those being designed.
  • Consult as needed with Inspired Academic staff to ensure that the educational programme is served properly by the new campus designs and to ensure that end user feedback filters into the current design work.
  • Develop business plans and cost plans for property development concepts with appropriate consultants as needed.
  • Develop uniform electronic and paper filing and digital archiving systems for the retention and easy systematic access for all the facilities records including as built drawing information. Set-up parallel systems at each campus and at Head Office.
  • Participate in the process of maintaining architectural standards at implemented Academies with respect to new additions to existing campus’ and the completion of partially executed campus’.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • A highly motivated and preferably experienced Architect - preferably with site experience and at least 10 years post RIBA Part 3 experience (or equivalent).
  • Currently at a Director or Associate level
  • Experience of Education Design is a fundamental requirement (including international experience)
  • Experience of managing consultant teams
  • CAD skills required- ability to work with DWGs, (3d modelling skills desirable).
  • Adobe Creative Suite experience is essential (Photoshop, In Design)
  • Microsoft Office full proficiency essential
  • Able to communicate well verbally and in writing, in English.
  • Proven record in building strong and sustainable relationships with all levels within and external to an organisation, from the student and educator level, to donors and governmental agencies.
  • The ability to be flexible and adaptable, especially when plans are not operating smoothly.
  • High Resilience and Fortitude, with the ability to seek appropriate solutions when challenges occur in the design and project phases.
  • Proven integrity and strong ethical behaviour.
  • Ability to work with and effectively manage volunteers
  • Proven record of understanding and keeping abreast of the new techniques and initiatives within the area of Design Project Management
  • Experience in campus facilities design, design and construction in developing countries and planning experience with a residential educational campus would be advantageous.
  • High degree of attention to detail and meeting deadlines without compromising the quality of the work expected.
