Role Summary

As an AI Governance & Cybersecurity Apprentice at Russell Investments, you will be at the intersection of innovation and protection. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our deployment of Artificial Intelligence ranging from custom model development and "vibe coding" (rapid prototyping) to third-party AI vendor integrations remains secure, ethical, and compliant with global financial regulations.

This is a hands-on learning opportunity. You will work directly with our AI engineering and security teams to build guardrails, assess risks in real-time, and help shape the future of AI within a leading investment firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the entire AI lifecycle, from initial model conceptualization to production deployment and decommissioning.

  • Document model lineage, data provenance, and decision-making logic to ensure transparency and auditability.

  • Monitor AI model performance and behavioural drift to prevent unintended outcomes.

  • Conduct security assessments on AI models and data pipelines to identify vulnerabilities (e.g., prompt injection, data poisoning, model inversion).

  • Assist in implementing "Human-in-the-Loop" controls to mitigate security risks during automated processes.

  • Collaborate with the security team to maintain a secure posture for LLMs, RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) architectures, and agentic workflows.

  • Provide real-time governance feedback during rapid prototyping and "vibe coding" sessions.

  • Help ensure that experimental code adheres to Russell Investments' security standards without stifling innovation.

  • Support the development and secure deployment of internal AI chatbots.

  • Perform rigorous security and compliance assessments on third-party AI APIs and SaaS vendors.

  • Maintain an inventory of all AI vendors and tools, evaluating their data handling, privacy policies, and security certifications.

  • Work with legal and compliance teams to ensure vendor contracts align with AI risk management frameworks.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology.

  • Understanding of AI Fundamentals: Familiarity with Large Language Models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and the mechanics of API integration.

  • Analytical Mindset: An obsession with detail—you enjoy breaking things to understand how to fix them.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to translate complex technical risks into clear language for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Passion for Governance: An interest in ethics, regulatory compliance, and the "why" behind secure software development.

Preferred Skills
Python, cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), or familiarity with frameworks like NIST AI RMF or OWASP Top 10 for LLMs.

What You Will Gain

  • Mentorship: Direct guidance from senior AI architects and cybersecurity leaders at a global financial institution.

  • High-Impact Exposure: The chance to influence how a major investment firm builds and manages AI.

  • Professional Growth: Structured training on industry-standard AI security practices, risk management, and the evolving legal landscape of AI.
