The Work You'll Do:
Self-service e-Commerce solutions – specifically those intended for small businesses (SMBs) – require a high-degree of iteration and design-first thinking to be successful. Teams responsible for delivering these solutions are highly collaborative, autonomous, and cross-functional. A Product Owner (PO) is responsible for shaping the product backlog, prioritizing tasks, and creating a shared understanding of the product vision within the team. The PO is the “heartbeat” of the team, setting the short-term direction while providing clarity, focus and alignment.
The Product Owner is responsible for ensuring the continued evolution of the product. The PO actively gathers product requirements and ensures that that team is always doing “the right thing” (as opposed to doing “the thing right,” which is the development team’s responsibility). The PO is closely connected with the development team, but is actively engaged with product leadership, product/UX design, marketing, support, and other roles. The PO owns the product backlog and prioritizes it to align with product strategy, business goals, and achieve project goals and objectives.
You’ll work closely with product leadership to understand the roadmap goals/strategy and distill high-level requirements into user stories that enable development teams to understand what problems need to be solved to create the best solution. As a Product Owner, you will also prioritize the development backlog and work with product leadership to plan and sequence the work appropriately. As features and user stories are delivered, you’ll work closely with QA to ensure problems are solved and requirements are met.
More specifically you will:
- Translate business problems and requirements into user stories for development teams to implement.
- Facilitate and lead cross-functional teams to document user stories to appropriate level of detail.
- Translate project goals/objectives/strategy to actionable work, prioritizing and sequencing the development work to achieve project goals and timelines.
- Partner with QA to define acceptance criteria and verify acceptance criteria are met.
- Research and respond to questions from designers, developers, and QA.
- Work alongside product leadership and marketing to conduct research which can be used to clarify requirements and ensure the solution will deliver value to end users.
- Clarify and refine user stories to an appropriate level of detail where needed.
- Collaborate with product management, development, and UX design to successfully document, scope and prioritize development.
- Partner with product manager to help define product vision and roadmap.
- Understand the product strategy as defined by product management.
- Coordinate the creation of product mockups and prototypes.
- Fulfill the "product owner role" which is responsible for prioritizing and maintaining a backlog.
- Communicate with stakeholders during the development of a product to keep them updated.
- Collect, coordinate, and prioritize bug fixes and testing efforts
