The Work You'll Do:
As a Regulatory Counsel Manager, you will lead a team of attorneys and tax professionals responsible for building and maintaining the taxability rules across all Sovos systems. You'll drive cross-functional initiatives with Sales, Marketing, and Development teams while setting and managing the Regulatory Content Roadmap. This role combines deep tax expertise with people leadership, offering the opportunity to shape how global businesses navigate complex transaction tax requirements.
More specifically, you will:
- Analyze the impact of tax law changes on system functionality and provide day-to-day guidance and leadership to your counsel team
- Proactively monitor legislative and regulatory developments in transaction tax worldwide, with emphasis on how changes may impact Sovos' systems
- Determine the impact of legislative and regulatory changes on Sovos' systems and provide detailed, timely, and accurate information to the Regulatory Content Team
- Research issues and determine proper tax treatment for monthly new content projects using multiple research tools and techniques
- Communicate legal analysis and findings clearly and accurately using appropriate legal citations
- Explain complex tax rules in clear language for tax and non-tax professionals both internally and externally
- Develop and foster professional relationships with high-level tax administrators across the globe
- Research and analyze client inquiries regarding the taxability of specific transactions under applicable state or national law
- Support the Sales team by discussing tax issues and system capabilities with prospects, and support Marketing by providing tax-centric materials and participating in webinars
- Collaborate with Product Management and Development teams to define system requirements, explore system improvements, and provide tax-related testing scenarios
- Act as the primary reviewer of work product from other department members
- Foster the development and growth of your team members through training and guidance
- Actively plan and manage the tax content roadmap and research projects with the Director, Regulatory Analysis
- Ensure content update processes and output comply with all current certification requirements
- Serve as an ambassador of Sovos by participating in external trainings, conferences, and industry events
What We Need From You
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the bar in at least one state; equivalent international designations are acceptable
- 5+ years of experience with transaction tax
- LLM in Tax, LLM Candidate, or MBA is a plus
- Strong management and leadership skills with the ability to develop team members
- Excellent time management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Outstanding research, analysis, and writing skills with strong attention to detail
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand tax-related postings and documents
- Effective communication skills to interact with teammates, colleagues, and customers across global time zones
- Ability to comprehend and communicate complex concepts clearly
- Proficiency with technology including phone systems, computer hardware, and software applications
- Willingness to travel minimally to Sovos locations and events
- Comfort working in a collaborative, global environment with cross-functional teams
