The Cloud Services organization operates a large global SaaS platform delivered across AWS and Azure, supported by a distributed team of engineers and operators. The mission is to maintain high availability, safeguard customer data, ensure cost efficiency, and meet regulatory requirements (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001). Cloud Cost Optimization Engineer role is a dedicated engineering position embedded within the internal cloud teams. The focus is to improve cloud cost efficiency, forecast and model workloads, automate anomaly detection, and drive accountability for consumption. This role works closely with platform engineering, cloud operations, site reliability engineering (SRE), and finance FP&A roles to ensure that cloud spending aligns with business priorities and operational needs.

The role delivers actionable insights and automated processes that enable teams to make data-driven decisions about AWS and Azure consumption, improve cost efficiency, and ensure sustainable growth of the SaaS platform without compromising performance or security.

Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will have a unique vantage point over the entire SaaS portfolio, combining a holistic perspective with deep, workload-level insight into how our services consume cloud resources. This is an opportunity to influence healthy business growth by identifying spend patterns, linking them to operational behaviors, and driving strategic recommendations that optimize both cost and performance. Your work will directly shape how we prioritize investments, remediate inefficiencies, and stack-rank services based on their financial and operational health.

You will analyze AWS and Azure billing data to uncover cost drivers, inefficiencies, and opportunities for rightsizing. By implementing strategies such as reserved-instance and savings plans, you will partner with engineering teams to remediate waste and align workloads with optimal consumption models. Your forecasting and predictive modelling skills will enable the business to budget accurately, avoid overruns, and make informed decisions on future initiatives.

Establishing robust cost allocation and tagging standards, you will foster accountability within individual service teams, ensuring they understand and own their consumption. Through thoughtfully designed dashboards and reports, you will present spend trends, anomalies, and the business impact of engineering choices—translating technical data into insights that influence decision-makers across the organization.

By modelling the relationships between workload patterns—such as traffic, transactions, and storage—and cost drivers, you will provide impact assessments for upcoming product or infrastructure changes. You will also implement automated anomaly detection workflows that open operational tickets in Jira, enabling the cloud operations teams to respond quickly to deviations. Your automation work will extend to integrating and normalizing AWS and Azure usage data into our FinOps platform, ensuring a consistent, cross-cloud view of spending.

Additionally, you will take ownership of optimizing costs for log management platforms (Logz.io, Splunk, New Relic, Loggly), collaborating with platform engineering to establish efficient ingestion, storage, and retention practices. Throughout, you will work closely with cloud operations, platform engineering, and site reliability engineering to embed cost optimization into our operational DNA, while partnering with finance to align forecasts and allocations with business planning cycles.

Required Skills

  • Cloud Expertise 3–5 years of operational or engineering experience with AWS or Azure.
  • FinOps & Cost optimization: Proven understanding of FinOps principles, cloud pricing models, and cost-saving strategies (rightsizing, reservations, savings plans).
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Proficient in data analysis, dashboard creation, and interpretation of billing datasets. Experience with SQL or equivalent, plus tools such as Power BI.
  • Automation & Tooling: Experience with scripting (Python, Bash) and APIs for automation of cost ingestion, anomaly detection, and reporting workflows.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Ability to present technical cost insights in clear business terms, influence decision-making, and work across engineering, operations, and finance teams.
  • Desirable: Experience with log platform cost management, FinOps Certified Practitioner, or cloud platform certifications.
